comradeship...

if you've ever driven along the new south wales coast, australia from sydney to wollongong and ventured onto lawrence hargrave drive instead of the freeway you may have spotted a monument over looking coledale beach opposite the hospital. its a magnificent stainless steel sculpture that at first glance its just a boat. at closer inspection it is a boat but with glorious angle wings as sails.

at the time of this photo i didn't pay attention to find out why or who this monument is dedicated too as i'd been wanting to capture it for so long and the colour that day was perfect. i've always loved how at different times of the day its colour and mood changes...

with a little internet research i now know the monument known as "comradeship" is dedicated to mike dwyer who was a prominent coledale resident. among his many activities, he became well known for leading a picket line at coledale hospital when a decision was made to shut the facility down. so it seems only fitting that a monument in his name stands opposite what he stood to save...
